多段フラッシュ蒸発(MSF)は、熱エネルギーを用いた海水淡水化技術です。プロセス内で発生する余熱を簡単に利用できることから、発電造水複合プラント(IWPP)で広く導入されています。MSFでは、まず加熱器で海水を加熱し、後段のフラッシュ室で圧力を下げることでフラッシュ蒸発させます。生成した凝縮水は、追加処理を施したうえでボイラー給水として使用されます。一方、主流の濃塩水はさらに濃縮されたのち、海へ排出されます。

MSFの安全かつ効率的な運転のためには、流量、圧力を適切に制御することがきわめて重要です。加熱された濃塩水には強い腐食作用があり、スケーリングを起こしやすい性質があります。KROHNEのOPTIFLUX電磁流量計シリーズには、こうした腐食性の高い条件に適したラインナップが揃っています。留出水の流量測定には、超音波式流量計 OPTISONIC 3400が最適です。また、圧力伝送器 OPTIBAR P 5060は、測定点に本体を直接取り付ける方式と、離れた場所に設置して接液部のダイアフラムシールと接続させる方式のいずれにも対応しており、各段の圧力を正確かつ着実に測定することができます。
