Overview
The SENSseries LB 480 density meter is a compact field device ideally suited to challenging measurement tasks involving density, concentration, and solids content. The density meter is highly sensitive and offers excellent measurement accuracy, allowing operation with very low source activity – a major advantage in terms of shielding costs and radiation protection requirements.
High reliability is ensured by comprehensive diagnostic functions, including continuous monitoring of detector performance through cross-checking with cosmic background radiation and other key parameters. This provides outstanding operational safety. The cosmic radiation control feature also enables the use of particularly low source activity.
The SENSseries LB 480 combines top-class measuring technology with exceptional manufacturing quality and innovative features. The SIL variant of the LB 480 is unique in the radiometric measurement market, as it is certified for density and low-level switch measurements in addition to high-level switch and continuous level measurements. The SENSseries LB 480 detectors are certified for use in SIL 2 applications, while SIL 3 compliance is achieved by adding an identical redundant SIL 2 detector for homogeneous redundancy. The certification covers all measurement applications, from high- and low-level alarms to continuous level and density measurements, ensuring the safe monitoring of critical processes.
The SpeedStar version of the LB 480 is designed for applications requiring reaction times in the millisecond range. While standard measurements generate a new reading every 500 ms, the SpeedStar version delivers results in just 50 ms — ten times faster. This enables rapid object detection, for example: identifying the leading edge of a steel plate moving at high speed on a roller conveyor; measuring density profiles of pipes or plates directly during extrusion; detecting plugs travelling through pipelines; or determining liquid levels inside bottles while they are still in motion on the production line.
