The role of biofuels

The process industry is under pressure, several chemical companies have recently closed their doors. High production costs, including energy costs, certainly contribute to this. What is the current situation regarding energy consumption in the Netherlands? 

In its infographic, ‘Energy in figures 2025’, Energie Beheer Nederland provides a clear overview of energy consumption in the Netherlands, including the use of biofuels.  The overview, based on 2023 CBS figures, shows that in 2023, 14% of our primary energy came from renewable sources. Wind and solar energy of course have a major role in this, but biofuels are also becoming increasingly important. Examples include biomethane, which is mixed into our natural gas network, bioethanol in Euro 95 and E10 gasoline, HVO100 (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), and SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel). Read more

Among all the reports about hydrogen, wind parks and grid congestion, reports about biofuels sometimes disappear into the background. That is quite unfortunate because biofuels can often be easily blended into an existing installation, enabling companies to ‘go green’ without major investments. A good example is a transport company which is able to switch from diesel to HVO100 without having to buy new trucks. Of course, this requires a solution for the higher costs of HVO100.
