Stolt Nielsen installed OPTIWAVEs

During dry docking in Santander, Spain in November, Stolt installed OPTIWAVE cargo level radars for all 20 cargo tanks on the Stolt Pelican. The installation works were performed efficiently by the ship's crew and local yard workers, and finally commissioned and tested by our service engineer.

Project information

Stolt Pelican was built in 1996 and is a high spec chemical tanker, normally trading in Europe. With 20 stainless steel cargo tanks, the ship can load all kinds of cargo, from vegoil to the most difficult acids and dangerous chemicals. The ship was originally equipped with a minimal hydrostatic pressure sensor system, but Stolt needed to lift the accuracy for measured ullage to a level where cargo operations could be made smoothly. Several cargo level radars were evaluated, and Stolt decided on the OPTIWAVE 8300 C Marine.

The system also included installation of new IG pressure sensors and temperature sensors. Everything was installed in 8 days during docking. Stolt is satisfied with the performance of the system after good operation and dependable cargo level readings for more than 3 months in service. The system is reportedly providing accurate levels making cargo operations easier for the on board crew.

The sister vessel Stolt Razorbill will have the same installation made during its next docking in June 2010.
