The role of salt should not be underestimated: Besides being used in food preparation and its healing effects in spas, it is also an essential raw material in the chemical industry. For over 170 years a large Swiss salt mine in the Rhine valley has been supplying people, spas and the chemical industry with this white gold.
The level of automation in the salt mine has increased considerably over recent years. When plans got underway to modify an existing facility in the salt mine, the company needed new flowmeters to control and monitor the brine and clarifying agent. This required exceedingly robust measuring equipment due to the extremely aggressive environment. The customer also wanted a highly reliable and flexible partner, who could, for example, provide rapid service.
The Swiss company installed KROHNE's OPTIFLUX 4300 electromagnetic flowmeter because it is wear-resistant and extremely robust and durable, even in corrosive environments. The OPTIFLUX is currently the only instrument to offer three types of diagnosis. OPTIFLUX's 3 x 100% diagnostics provides the user with reliable information about the condition of the instrument, the quality of the measurement and any operating faults. These extensive diagnosis functions not only ensure high accuracy of measurement but also mean that malfunctions can be quickly identified and located, minimising production downtime.
The Swiss salt mine were so impressed with the performance of the OPTFLUX that they installed a number of other devices. These are being used to measure a flow rate of between 0 - 500 m3/h in the mother liquor reservoir and to monitor the clarifying agent at a flow of between 0 - 7 m3/h.
The company have been using KROHNE instrumentation for over 13 years because despite the harsh environment, the flowmeters have always delivered highly accurate and reliable measurements.
