BM 70A makes a clean cut in the steel industryBM 70A has been employed by Salzgitter AG steel works for the task of detecting the edge of steel slabs Due to its ability to withstand extreme environments KROHNE's BM 70A has been employed by Salzgitter AG steel works in Germany for the extraordinary task of detecting the edge of steel slabs during the casting process. Precise detection of the slab edge is vital if slabs are to be sliced into exact lengths. As this is a continuous process any incorrect readings would result in havoc on the conveyor belt and could cause extensive damage to the casting system. Alternative methods of measurement, such as optical and ultrasonics have proved impractical due to the harsh conditions. However, KROHNE has provided an ingenious solution to the problem. By mounting a BM 70A with a wave guide and short special antenna over the conveyor belt and operating it in reflection mode the meter identifies where one slab ends and another begins, then transmits this information to the slab cutter. Due to its rugged design the BM 70A is able to provide the steel works with consistently reliable results.
