Revolutionary new polymer counts on KROHNE for qualityPEEK™ polymer, a revolutionary high-performance thermo-plastic manufactured exclusively by Lancashire-based Victrex plc, relies on KROHNE BM 70 level radar units and H 250 flowmeters to maintain quality in production.
Victrex found that KROHNE’s “very reliable” non contact radar level equipment solved problems in measuring the reactor levels – which had previously proved a difficult area to monitor effectively – and ensure the quality and repeatability of the processes.
BM 70 and BM 702 level radar units are used in the receiving vessels at the site. In addition, a total of 18 H 250 flowmeters are in use in a variety of duties, having been supplied with special heating jackets to prevent molten products from solidifying.
PEEK’s™ unique properties include chemical resistance; wear resistance; high-temperature performance; non-flammability; extremely low smoke and toxic gas emission during combustion; excellent electrical properties; hydrolysis resistance; and radiation resistance.
Key markets for PEEK™ are transportation, electronics, medical, food processing and industrial . The manifold uses of the material include applications in aircraft interiors due to its fire retardant qualities; extending the life of gear transmission in cars as part of the ABS braking system; combating fatigue in bus engines; and helping develop mega speed chips and disc drives.
In the field of medicine, inherently pure PEEK™ has successfully replaced glass, stainless steel, titanium and other metals in a large range of applications where it provides reliable and cost-effective parts. In dental and other surgery, semi-crystalline PEEK™ polymer is used in instruments requiring extensive repeat use, as the material can withstand up to 3,000 autoclave sterilisation cycles in which temperatures can reach 134°C.
