BM 70A Measuring gas volume in southern China KROHNE's BM 70A radar level measurement system has been performing well on an application measuring gas volume in southern China.
The customer had traditionally used mechanical instruments to measure volume at the gas tank, but these instruments had rapidly become outdated and were showing many signs of defects. Instability and low tolerance levels were proving problematic, as well as unsatisfactory accuracy and the fact that remote control measurement was not an option.
The customer's 22m gas tanks consist of four groups of tiers which allow the tank to expand and contract depending on the stored volume. The bottom tier, 8m high, is filled with water for sealing.
With increasing gas being injected into the tank, the top tier slowly rises in spirals at an angle of approximately 20°, while the second highest tier rotates in the opposite direction at the same angle. The two lowest tiers follow the same procedure sequentially. As a result, the top of the tank reaches 20m.
The BM 70A is mounted on the tank rack, continuously monitoring the distance between the water and the top of the tank during the expansion and contraction phases. The unit has since operated to the customer's full satisfaction.
KROHNE have since installed BM70As on several applications in the south of China.
