BM 700 helps manage inventory of adhesive mixture

Problem
A Wisconsin label manufacturer has approximately 40 storage tanks containing adhesives. The tanks are 18ft. tall and hold between 4,000 – 8,000 gallons. For inventory control purposes, the company needed an accurate measure of each tank’s volume. Operators would peer into the tank and estimate the level amount, and if that didn’t work, they tapped on the tank(s) to audibly determine level. The company spent as many as 10 hours a week checking tank level by sight and sound. It wanted to improve its measurement accuracy and be more efficient in doing so.

The company wanted an inexpensive solution and first chose to install an ultrasonic unit. However, the ultrasonic unit by itself couldn’t provide the results they needed.

Solution
The KROHNE BM 700 Non-contact Level Radar Gauge was installed so that the output from the BM 700 displays volume. The level information is sent to a remote panel with a digital indicator – no more tapping or peering into the tanks. The customer could not believe how accurate the BM 700 was -- or how reliable -- but after only 15 minutes was convinced that the BM 700 was the solution to their problem. The company ordered 18 units on the spot, and 18 more shortly thereafter to outfit almost all of their storage tanks. The customer now saves 1 – 2 labor hours per day for each of its 36 tanks. The total cost of the solution (including 36 BM 700’s, panels and startup) was only $78,000
